Thermo Fisher Scientific executives including Dan Shine, Senior Vice President and President, Analytical Instruments Group, joined University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of UConn’s cutting-edge research center, Innovation Partnership Building (IPB). The 115,000 square feet state-of-the-art research space provides researchers from the university and regional industries access to some of the most advanced equipment in the world.
IPB houses the Thermo Fisher Scientific Center of Advanced Microscopy and Materials Analysis (CAMMA), one of the most advanced electron microscopy facilities in the world. It offers researchers training, research funding, and access to high-end microscopy equipment including the Thermo Scientific Titan Themis and Talos TEM, among others, and attracts leading industry researchers to the UConn campus.
Used in materials characterization, the Thermo Scientific instruments at CAMMA provide scientists the tools necessary to conduct leading research in areas such as biomedical materials, powder analysis, and clean energy. In fact, one research team is conducting cutting-edge research on biomedical materials for bone repair and regeneration, which will help patients suffering from bone fractures or defects. Another team is using electron microscopy to reveal powder particle size distributions, defect distributions and porosity in additively manufactured components to improve industry’s ability to produce consistent parts with known and predictable properties. And yet another team is investigating applications for clean energy materials and other biomedical applications.
Stay tuned for an interview series where we will hear directly from scientists and UConn leaders about how CAMMA has allowed them to advance their materials science research.
