For five days in March, more than 10,000 scientists will explore the overarching multidisciplinary theme of Chemistry of Natural Resources at the American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting & Exposition in Denver, Colorado USA. The society touts itself as the “world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources and authorities in scientific information. A non-profit organization, ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemical enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe.”
There will be scientific professionals from all chemical disciplines exploring new ways to analyze the chemistry of natural resources, and this cross section of attendees always makes a great, diverse experience. We welcome interaction from all the enthusiastic scientists and students during the scientific and educational activities held on and off the show floor. In fact, we will be conducting several workshops on the applications of Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Raman Microscopy and Imaging, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and benchtop Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in the protection of natural resources. You can see a schedule of the different workshops and presentations listed below, or on this page: Show Workshops and Presentations
If you are interested in the determination of elemental components of fracking flowback, make sure you talk with our experts. Inadvertent spills or the storage of fracking flowback solutions (fracking solution that returns to the surface via the well bore) into unlined collection ponds can contaminate ground water. Also, high levels of minerals found in fracking wastewater can impact drinking water sources prior to disinfection at downstream drinking water utilities. You’ll discover that the use of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is a key solution for examining fracking flowback waters. We also can show you applications that use ion chromatography to quantify anions and cations in produced water from hydraulic fracturing.
Besides talking about protecting our natural resources, you’ll get to see some instruments that were developed with that issue in mind. There will be spectrometers that eliminate the need for consumables because their temperature-controlled permanent magnets do not require cryogens.
If you get a chance to stay some extra days in the Denver area, there is plenty to do – from art museums to world class skiing, to brewery tours. And if you’re hungry, one of my favorite places is the Paramount Café which is listed on the US Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places, once served as the entrance and lobby of the Historic Paramount Theatre, and now proclaims itself as the original Rock ‘n’ Roll Café. They offer such an array of burgers that for two weeks in March they host a “burger war” between chefs where customers get to vote for their favorite burgers. (Sorry, by the time the show starts, a winner will be proclaimed.)
Hope to see you there, but if you can’t make it, you can register here to receive the presentations and explore some application notes and follow the show twitter feed at #ACSdenver.
