That&#8217;s a lot of bang for those bucks.<\/p>\n<p>If you are manufacturing or providing fireworks and sparklers, you should know that the the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Business--Manufacturing\/Business-Education\/Business-Guidance\/Fireworks\">U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a> (CPSC) has issued mandatory safety regulations for fireworks devices. The CPSC enforces its fireworks regulations under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA),\u00a0<a id=\"anch_80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/15\/1261\">15 U.S.C. \u00a71261<\/a>. It is a violation of Federal law to import, distribute or sell fireworks that violate CPSC regulations.<\/p>\n<p>What exactly are in those fireworks and sparklers?\u00a0 Lots of minerals.\u00a0 Metals, like aluminum (from bauxite), titanium, and magnesium are used in sparklers and create those bright white sparks.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpyro.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=379:be-sparkler-safe&amp;catid=20:site-content&amp;Itemid=218\">Be careful<\/a>, though.\u00a0 Those bright white sparks can be quite dangerous.\u00a0 (Take a look at our sister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/metals\/celebrating-july-4-with-metal-sparklers?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2023July\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analyzing Metals blog<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about sparkler manufacturing and safety.)<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/images\/what-minerals-produce-colors-fireworks\">United States Geological Survey,<\/a> there are specific mineral elements that provide the color, bangs, sparkle, and flashes in fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>Which element gives red fireworks their deep hue? \u00a0Which ones are used to create smoke effects or glitter effects? \u00a0We\u2019ll give you a hint. \u00a0Here are the atomic numbers on the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.thermofisher.com\/TFS-Assets\/CAD\/posters\/CAD-Niton-Periodictable-fxl.pdf?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2023July\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">periodic table<\/a>\u00a0that are commonly used for firework displays:\u00a013, 22, 26, 29, 38, 40 , and 56 Have you guessed?<\/p>\n<p>Mineral elements, like gold, titanium, zirconium, magnesium, strontium, copper, and barium produce the beautiful gold, red, blue, green and purple colors we see. Take a look at this <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.thermofisher.com\/TFS-Assets\/CAD\/Reference-Materials\/Infographic_fireworks.pdf?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2023July\">fireworks infographic<\/a> to see the Atomic numbers that are used in fireworks, and which metals are used for creating smoke, loud bangs, and glitter effects.<\/p>\n<p>Before those fireworks shoot up into the sky, the minerals must be mined out of the ground.\u00a0 Mining companies utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/us\/en\/home\/industrial\/spectroscopy-elemental-isotope-analysis\/portable-analysis-material-id\/portable-mining-exploration-solutions\/portable-hard-rock-mining-analysis.html?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2018July\">portable XRF analyzers<\/a> when looking for base metals or precious metals, including those used in sparklers and fireworks.
