
{"id":12280,"date":"2021-05-04T12:00:20","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T12:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/mining\/?p=12280"},"modified":"2021-05-04T12:00:20","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T12:00:20","slug":"gallium-has-become-critical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/mining\/gallium-has-become-critical\/","title":{"rendered":"Gallium Has Become Critical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/mining\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/istock-483115827_gallium-4.jpg\" style=\"float: right;border: 0;margin: 10px\" alt=\"Gallium Has Become Critical\" title=\"Gallium Has Become Critical\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright\" \/>This spring, the U.S.&nbsp;Geological&nbsp;Survey&nbsp;(USGS) updated its&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/energy-and-minerals\/mineral-resources-program\/science\/usmin-mineral-deposit-database?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects#qt-science_center_objects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USMIN Mineral Deposit Database<\/a><span>&nbsp;(USMIN)&nbsp;for the mineral commodity&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/fs\/2013\/3006\/\">gallium<\/a><span>, one of&nbsp;<\/span>35 mineral commodities<span>&nbsp;declared critical by the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Department of the Interior in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webelements.com\/gallium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Web Elements<\/a>&nbsp;website describes the element &#8212; Number 31 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/content\/dam\/tfs\/ATG\/CAD\/CAD%20Marketing%20Material\/CAD%20Marketing%20Documents\/Infographics\/CAD-Niton-Periodictable-fxl.pdf?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2021May\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Periodic Table<\/a> &#8212; as having &#8220;a beautiful, silvery appearance, and the solid metal exhibits a conchoidal fracture similar to glass.&#8221;&nbsp; There is one warning with the metal element, however.&nbsp; It expands on solidifying so it should not be stored in glass or metal containers, as they may break as the metal solidifies.<\/span>&nbsp; Another note from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Gallium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>, is that i<span>ngestion of this material may be toxic. &#8220;It is corrosive to&nbsp;<\/span>aluminum<span>. If exposed to high temperatures,&nbsp;<\/span>gallium<span>&nbsp;may emit toxic fumes which may form a corrosive alkaline solution with&nbsp;<\/span>water<span>.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gallium&nbsp;is used to manufacture integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices, which include laser diodes, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors and solar cells.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/29476-gallium.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LiveScience<\/a>,&nbsp;about 95 percent of all gallium produced is used to make gallium arsenide (GaAs), a compound used in microwave and infrared circuits, semiconductors and blue and violet LEDs,&nbsp;The compound gallium nitride (GaN) is used as a semiconductor in Blu-ray technology, mobile phones and pressure sensors for touch switches.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/periodicals\/mcs2021\/mcs2021-gallium.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USGS Mineral Report<\/a>&nbsp;notes,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Gallium occurs in very small concentrations in ores of other metals. Most gallium is produced as a byproduct of processing bauxite, and the remainder is produced from zinc-processing residues. The average gallium content of bauxite is 50 parts per million. U.S. bauxite deposits consist mainly of subeconomic resources that are not generally suitable for alumina production owing to their high silica content. Some domestic zinc ores contain up to 50 parts per million gallium and could be a significant resource, although no gallium is currently recovered from domestic ores. Gallium contained in world resources of bauxite is estimated to exceed 1 million tons, and a considerable quantity could be contained in world zinc resources. However, less than 10% of the gallium in bauxite and zinc resources is potentially recoverable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><em>No domestic primary (low-purity, unrefined) gallium has been recovered since 1987. Globally, primary gallium is recovered as a byproduct of processing bauxite and zinc ores&#8230;.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Miners seek solutions for rapid geochemical analysis that will enable them to increase <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2SolPOL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploration<\/a> discovery success rates of critical and other <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3eT8DZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minerals<\/a> and metal elements, identify drill targets quickly, make on-site decisions about whether to stop or continue drilling, and decide where to focus on the grid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/order\/catalog\/product\/XL2GOLDDXRF?icid=CAD_blog_mining_2021May\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portable&nbsp;X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers<\/a>&nbsp;are making a critical difference in mining exploration and processing.
