Brown Convention Center in Houston at <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">2014 Winter NAPE<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">.<\/span> There were plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23theNAPe_2014&amp;src=hash\">#TheNAPE_2014<\/a>\u00a0tweets proclaiming \u201cHouston is booming, but the rest of the U.S. economy is sluggish\u201d after Former\u00a0Federal Reserve\u00a0Chairman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/pagead\/adview?ai=BiQpnfs8hU8DxA8LU0AGG8YH4CPHhhPgEAAAAEAEgADgAWOner9SSAWDJpoCJhKTsD4IBF2NhLXB1Yi05NzM2MDkyNjA0Njc3NTE2sgETd3d3LmJpempvdXJuYWxzLmNvbboBCWdmcF9pbWFnZcgBCdoBZ2h0dHA6Ly93d3cuYml6am91cm5hbHMuY29tL2hvdXN0b24vbmV3cy8yMDE0LzAyLzA2L2dyZWVuc3Bhbi10ZWxscy1uYXBlLWNvbmZlcmVuY2UtZWNvbm9teS1yZW1haW5zLmh0bWyYAr6eAsACAuACAOoCHTQ2MzUvYnpqLmhvdXN0b24vYXJ0aWNsZV9wYWdl-AKC0h6QA-ADmAPgA6gDAeAEAaAGIA&amp;sigh=fPCA6GaxsGE&amp;adurl=http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/imgad\/1482981\/statoil2014interstitial.html%3Ft%3D10%26cT%3Dhttp%253A\/\/bizjournals.com%26l%3Dhttp%253A\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/houston\/search\/results%253Fq%253DAlan%252520Greenspan\">Alan Greenspan<\/a>\u00a0forecasted the oil boom\u2019s effect on the US economy. There was also plenty of foot traffic at our booth.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to last year, we found many more people were looking for us and specifically for ways to get geochemical data.\u00a0 Owners, vice presidents, investors\u2026 everyone wanted to know how much mineralogy can be inferred from, and what kind of data can be provided about, elemental composition with portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niton.com\/en\/mining\/applications\/oil-and-gas-exploration-and-production\">oil and gas exploration and production<\/a>\u00a0(E&amp;P) market is quickly adopting field-portable XRF analyzers to rapidly analyze a variety of samples in the field including drill cuttings, core samples, outcrops, and piston cored sediments. While these\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thermoscientific.com\/en\/products\/handheld-xrf.html\">handheld XRF analyzers<\/a>\u00a0are not used to directly analyze hydrocarbon fluids, they can analyze major and trace elements of host rocks.\u00a0These assay data are very important in interpretation of the hydrocarbon potential of the strata and can be used for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0 Inferring Mineralogy<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0 Inferring Lithology (Mud Logging)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0 Chemostratigraphy<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0 Reservoir Characterization<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0 Oil and Gas Productivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecomii.com\/science\/encyclopedia\/chemostratigraphy\">chemostratigraphy<\/a>, the study of the variation of chemistry within sedimentary sequences, was brought up in several booth discussions. Many visitors were impressed that XRF analysis can detect uranium, thorium, magnesium, aluminum, silica, and calcium.\u00a0 Their interest was piqued when they realized that if they can detect those elements as well as some others, they can figure the ratios of aluminum\/silica and aluminum\/calcium and be able to tell if they are in a shale formation \u2026 or if they see iron sulphur, they know there is iron pyrite in the vicinity. And if the calcium number drops down, they should see the silica ratio go up to sandstone, which will help in their decision about fracking in the area, since <a href=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/mining\/anions-metals-analysis-hydraulic-fracturing-waters-marcellus-shale-drilling-operations\/\">frackin<\/a>g is of no use in sandstone.<\/p>\n<p>We also got many inquiries about automatic data input into their proprietary mudlogging systems. Having the gamma logs from the down hole drills correlate to the elemental composition and Total Organic Carbon (TOC), will help let them know where oil plays.\u00a0 All in all, most executives agreed that immediate, onsite, XRF analysis can be a great help in decision making.\u00a0 Another observation is the increased number of posters that were presented by the universities that included elemental data.<\/p>\n<p>There seems to be a growing acceptance of portable XRF by academics who are embracing the idea that elemental composition from xrf analysis is accurate and reliable in E&amp;P.
