Manganese (Mn) is not a rare metal as it makes up about 0.1% of the earth\u2019s crust. Manganese ores usually consist of dark brown to black oxides particularly pyrolusite (MnO<sub>2<\/sub>) and psilomelane [(Ba,H<sub>2<\/sub>O)<sub>2<\/sub>Mn<sub>5<\/sub>O<sub>10<\/sub>]. Manganese carbonate (rhodochrosite, MnCO<sub>3<\/sub>) and silicate (braunite, MnSiO<sub>3<\/sub>) may occur locally. All manganese minerals usually show a close spatial relation to the iron ores.  Manganese is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thermoscientific.com\/en\/about-us\/promotions\/advancing-mining--the-thermo-scientific-mining-portfolio.html?ca=advancingmining\">mined<\/a> in countries such as South Africa, Australia, China, Brazil, Gabon, Ukraine, India, Ghana and Kazakhstan.\u00a0 According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/minerals.usgs.gov\/minerals\/pubs\/commodity\/manganese\/mcs-2014-manga.pdf\">United States Geological Society<\/a>, \u201cLand-based manganese resources are large but irregularly distributed; those in the United States are very low grade and have potentially high extraction costs.
