The common occurrence of organic contaminants, like pharmaceuticals, steroids and hormones in surface waters, has raised the awareness of the role played by the release of treated or untreated sewage in the water quality along sensitive coastal ecosystems. Florida is home of many important protected environments ranging from wetlands to coral reefs which are in close proximity to large metropolitan cities. In our webinar, Dr. Piero Gardinali of Florida International University, will review a workflow for the untargeted / targeted / suspect screening analysis of organic contaminants in environmental samples from urban and natural environments. Details including sample preparation techniques and the use of High Resolution Accurate Mass (HRAM) Orbitrap™ technology will be discussed. In addition, the use of a systematic sample screening workflow and its role in the assessment of water and ecosystem vitality will also be explored.
Piero Gardinali, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, Florida International University,Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Marine Sciences Program
Dr. Gardinali received his Ph.D in Oceanography and chemical analysis in 1996 from Texas A&M University. Today he is a full professor of chemistry in the Marine Sciences Program at Florida International University. He is also the current Co-Director of Southeast Research Center. Dr. Gardinali's research focuses on studies regarding the origin, fate and transport of anthropogenic organic compounds in freshwater and coastal environments.
