What is Innovation Day?

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Biocom, and Connect are providing an opportunity for entrepreneurs and companies to present their life science product innovation ideas to key decision makers at Thermo Fisher Scientific and to the public. This is a unique opportunity for your innovation idea to be publicly recognized and assessed.

Technology categories

There are three technology categories:

  1. Innovative technologies, reagents, devices/apparatus, products, ideas that can solve an unmet customer need in the research tools market.
  2. Application of consumer devices (e.g., iPhone™, Android™) to research tools area.
  3. New combination, use or improvement to Thermo Fisher Scientific products.

The awards

A total of three prizes will be awarded across all technology categories.
First place: $15,000
Second place: $10,000
Third place: $5,000

Who can participate?

US residents at least 18 years old. Healthcare Professionals may not participate in this promotion. Presentations must be in person, and you must be present to win an award.

How do I submit my innovation idea?

Submitting your innovation idea is easy: just click on the “Apply Now” button above after reading and agreeing to complete the terms and conditions, and complete the short application form. Contest submissions must be received by Sponsor no later than October 1, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. US Pacific Time to be included in the Contest.

Please only submit NON-CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION and review the terms and conditions below. All information that is submitted is understood to be non-confidential and will be treated accordingly.

Please consider any relevant policies of your organization before submitting an idea. For example, if you are a university employee, you may wish to consult with your Technology Transfer Office.

What happens after I submit the form?

You will receive a confirmation email notifying you that your submission has been received. Once the submission has been received, it cannot be amended.

Your submission will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges. On October 2, 2015, you will be notified by email if you have been selected as a semi-finalist, and may be asked to provide additional information regarding your innovation idea. If you are selected as a semi-finalist, you will be asked to present your innovation idea in-person before a panel of judges at the Biocom offices on October 15, 2015.

If you are a semi-finalist, you will be asked to provide a copy of your presentation to the Sponsor no later than October 13, 2015 at 5:00 p.m US Pacific Time.

Presentation format and suggested presentation topics

Semi-finalist presentations (morning session):

On the morning of October 15, 2015, up to 24 semi-finalists will have five minutes to present their innovation idea to Thermo Fisher Scientific, Biocom and/or Connect judges, followed by five minutes of questions from the judges. No audio-visual or other presentation materials will be provided, but you may provide your own materials including laptop computer, printouts, etc.

You may present any information, but we suggest you consider discussing the nature of the innovation, any unique aspects and how it may address customers’ needs.

From the pool of semi-finalists, up to six finalists will be selected and announced at the start of the afternoon session.

Finalist presentations (afternoon session):

We’ll announce the finalists in the afternoon of October 15, 2015. The finalists will have 10 minutes to present their innovation to the public and panel of judges, followed by five minutes of questions. If you wish to present using Microsoft™ PowerPoint™ slides, a computer (PC) with the Microsoft PowerPoint program and screen will be available. No other presentation materials will be provided.

From the finalists, one first place ($15,000 prize), one second place ($10,000 prize) and one third place ($5,000 prize) winners will be selected.

To participate in the Innovation Day Contest (the “Contest”), you must submit the submission form (the “Submission Form”) available here no later than October 1, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. US Pacific Time. The Contest is open only to persons 18 years and older in the US (excluding Puerto Rico) who submit a completed Submission Form. Healthcare Professionals (term defined in the complete Terms and Conditions) may not participate in this promotion. All entries must be in the English language. There is a limit of five entries per participant and it is possible for a participant to win more than one prize. Other eligibility restrictions may apply. Sponsor will select three winners from all qualifying entries. The first place winner will receive a cash prize of USD $15,000, the second place winner will receive a cash prize of USD $10,000, and the third place winner will receive a cash prize of USD $5,000. The winner is responsible for any taxes due on their prize. A panel consisting of ten Thermo Fisher Scientific employees with backgrounds in Business, Finance or Research & Development, will select up to 24 semi-finalists based upon the following criteria:

  • Degree of innovation: is the submitted idea original and innovative? For example, does the idea challenge existing paradigms; address an innovative hypothesis or critical barrier to progress in the field? Does the idea develop or employ novel concepts, approaches, methodologies, tools, or technologies? Is this a ‘game changing’ innovation? (35%)
  • Value to Customer: is there an estimated large commercial opportunity for the submitted idea? For example, is there a large addressable market, does the idea solve an unmet need of customers, are there few competitors in the space, are customers willing to pay for the innovation? (35%)
  • Technical and/or commercial feasibility: if the innovation is still in development or at concept stage, how likely is the innovation to be technically achievable? For example, is there a working prototype demonstrating proof-of-concept, or does the innovation rely on established and proven concepts or components that will likely work in a new combination? If the innovation is product ready, how likely is the product to be a commercial success? For example, is the path to market well defined, is the product customer friendly or easy to implement, is the product easy to manufacture, is the product able to be scaled-up to meet demand? (30%)

The semi-finalists will be notified by approximately October 2, 2015 and each semi-finalist will be asked to make a live, in-person presentation of their idea before a panel of judges at Biocom, 10996 Torreyana Road, San Diego, California 92121 on the morning of October 15, 2015 (the “Event”). The Thermo Fisher Scientific judges, together with a representative from Biocom and a representative from Connect will then select up to 6 finalists who will be asked to present their idea before the panel of judges and the general public at the Event during the afternoon of October 15. The three winners will be selected and, contingent upon certain conditions being met, the winners will be provided with their prize. Presenters must attend the Event in order to be eligible to win a prize and presenters will be responsible for their own accommodations and travel to the Event; no travel assistance or accommodations will be provided.

Sponsor reserves the right to cancel the Contest if a minimum of 40 qualified submissions are not received by the Sponsor by the submission deadline.

The participants must certify that they are not prohibited by employment, contract, or law from entering this Contest or accepting a prize from Sponsor. The institution or company that employs a potential winner must confirm that the potential winner is permitted to accept the prize from Sponsor before the winner can be selected. If a potential winner is unable to accept a prize, other finalists will move up a place, and an alternate potential winner(s) will be selected until the prizes can be awarded.
