Available on Thermo Scientific Krios and Glacios Cryo-TEMs, Thermo Scientific Selectris and Selectris X Imaging Filters are post-column imaging filters that improve the contrast of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, resulting in high-resolution structures up to atomic resolution. The zero-loss filtering of Selectris Filters removes noise caused by inelastically scattered electrons, producing an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and better contrast. Designed for high stability, the zero-loss peak position of Selectris Filters has minimized sensitivity to temperature variations in the environment, eliminating the need for frequent tuning.
The Selectris X Imaging Filter builds on the Selectris platform with a more advanced electron-optical design for further aberration correction. This reduces distortion in both the image and energy domains, supporting demanding cryo-EM applications such as high-resolution/atomic-resolution single particle analysis. The Selectris Imaging Filter provides the same core benefits of zero-loss filtering, stability, and ease of use for high-performance cryo-EM workflows.
Vitrified biological samples are radiation sensitive, so cryo-EM data must be acquired under low-dose conditions. This limits the signal available in each exposure and makes image contrast and signal-to-noise ratio critical. Selectris Imaging Filters improve contrast by using zero-loss filtering to remove inelastically scattered electrons from the image-forming signal. This helps improve the signal-to-noise ratio of images, supports high-resolution reconstruction, and can increase the fraction of usable data. As a result, Selectris Imaging Filters can improve productivity across both single particle analysis and cryo-electron tomography workflows.
A Selectris Imaging Filter improves the signal before it reaches the detector by removing inelastically scattered electrons from the image-forming signal. The Thermo Scientific Falcon 4i Direct Electron Detector then quickly records the filtered signal with high DQE using accurate electron-event localization in the instrument’s native EER file format. Together, the Selectris Imaging Filter and Falcon 4i Detector help you extract more useful signal from challenging cryo-ET samples and support demanding high-resolution single particle analysis workflows.
Selectris Imaging Filters are available with new Thermo Scientific Krios and Glacios Cryo-TEMs. Retrofit options may also be available for many Thermo Scientific cryo-TEMs operating with Windows 10. For upgrades of existing systems, compatibility should be confirmed for the specific microscope configuration.
