Laboratory automation in microbiology: Accelerating the impact through AI and digital imaging

Clinical Microbiology relies on technically skilled laboratorians to process and interpret cultures from clinical specimens. Laboratory automation provides improved accuracy, decreased turnaround times, improved efficiency and reduced reliance on acquiring, training, and maintaining a qualified workforce. However, the impact of automation remains unfulfilled, in part, because robotics fail to incorporate interpretive processes needed to fully prioritize microbiology work vital to maximizing efficiencies and accelerating reporting. Experience from the use of an in-vitro diagnostic device incorporating machine learning algorithms with digital image capture will be presented.
