          Increase Throughput Using Magnetic Sector GC-HRMS

          Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals, produced either intentionally or as byproducts of industrial and agricultural activity. Due to the persistent nature of POPs, many of these compounds migrate naturally from the environment into plant food sources and up the food chain where they bioaccumulate in the fatty tissue of animals.

          Magnetic Sector GC-HRMS systems are the highest performing mass spectrometers for routine target compound analysis of dioxins and POPs in all kinds of sample matrices. The practical use of these instruments has come a long way since 2005, when attaching two gas chromatographs to one source was new for magnetic sector instruments. The technique now provides full compliance worldwide with any regulatory method for detecting dioxins, PCBs, or PBDEs in food and environmental matrices.

          This presentation will discuss how magnetic sector GC–HRMS works in a commercial POPs laboratory to increase throughput. While primarily used for dioxin analysis, we will also show data for PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs.

          In this webcast, we will discuss the results of experiments designed to test the suitability and capabilities of magnetic sector GC–HRMS for target compound analysis, including:

          Pacific Rim Laboratories

          David Hope has been active in the environmental laboratory business for thirty-six years and is a recognized expert in the analysis of trace organic pollutants. He is a founding partner and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Rim Laboratories, an environmental lab specializing in the ultra-trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by HRMS, with clients in based in Asia, South America, Europe, and the United States. David first started working on dioxin analysis in the late 1980s and now oversees an 8000 sq. ft. food and environmental testing lab with three Thermo Scientific DFS Magnetic Sector GC-HRMS and two TSQ 8000EVO GC-MS-MS. He has been invited on several occasions to talk on POPs analysis at Thermo Scientific’s POPs Symposia and has presented papers on dioxin and PCB analysis at the International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants (also known as the Dioxin Conference). These papers include the "Improved PCB Congeners Specific Analysis by HRGC-HRMS," "Inexpensive Rapid Method for POPs Analysis of Food using ASE and Tandem Acid Silica/Carbon Columns," and more. Dave has taken active role in the Canadian lab industry and is a Past President of the Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories and former First Vice Chair of the Canadian Environment Industry Association.
