Invitrogen BODIPY FL色素は明るい緑色の蛍光色素で、フルオレセイン（FITC）やAlexa Fluor 488色素と同様の励起および蛍光波長を有します。高い吸光係数と蛍光量子収率を有し、溶媒極性やpHの変化に比較的影響を受けません。水溶性の高いAlexa Fluor 488色素やフルオレセイン（FITC）とは異なり、BODIPY色素は脂質、膜、およびその他の親油性化合物の染色において優れた独自の疎水性特性を有しています。
BODIPY Fl色素は比較的長い励起状態（通常5ナノ秒以上）を維持し、蛍光偏光ベースのアッセイや、多光子励起用の大きな2光子断面積も大きいです。
