Celiac disease is a lifelong condition in which ingestion of gluten, the water insoluble wheat gliadin and the prolamins in rye and barley leads to chronic inflammation and damage of the small intestinal mucosa. Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the major autoantigen in celiac disease.

The alcohol-soluble polypeptides of gluten, the gliadins, are responsible for the toxic effects on the intestinal mucosa.

Antibodies directed to tissue transglutaminase and antibodies directed to gliadin are used as serological tests for celiac disease.

EliA is an enzyme immunoassay to measure autoantibodies in blood and serum and runs on these fully automated scalable systems: Phadia 100, Phadia 250, Phadia 2500 and Phadia 5000.
