General Description
- Hydroxychloroquine sulfate shows antimalarial activity against malaria parasites mainly in the intra-erythrocytic phase of its life cycle. It acts by inhibiting the heme polymerase inside the food vacuole of the parasites
- It shows an inhibitory activity in autophagy preventing the lysosome fusion with the autophagosome
- Some studies demonstrated that hydroxychloroquine sulfate, due to its antiviral activity can restrict HIV infection in vitro
Applications
- Hydroxychloroquine sulfate displays antiviral and anti-rheumatic activities
- In vitro and in vivo experiments have been performed to investigate the role of hydroxychloroquine sulfate in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 disease
