General description

• Hydrocortisone is the synthetic formulation of the naturally occurring hormone, cortisol
• It is available as a white crystalline powder soluble in water, DMSO, and ethanol
• It is stable at room temperature but sensitive to light, and reactive in the presence of strong oxidizing agents

Applications

• Hydrocortisone works as an agonist to glucocorticoid receptors, thereby suppressing the inflammatory response of the immune system
• It’s administration induces gluconeogenesis, thus increasing endogenous blood sugar levels
• Research indicates a role for hydrocortisone in the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates
