General Description
• Finasteride is an inhibitor of the enzyme 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
• Finasteride also has been explored in neuroscience, as 5α-reductase enzymes are present in the central nervous system
• Finasteride has been seen to cross the blood-brain barrier and block production of neurosteroids
Applications
• Finasteride is mainly used in studies of prostate hyperplasia and tumors in mice, and can be studied in vitro or in vivo for its effects on hyperplasia, proliferation, and antioxidant activity
• Its activity has also been explored in brain, liver and testis tissues
• In vivo injection of finasteride has been shown to decrease neurogenesis and influence neuronal plasticity in mice
