Grow fastidious organisms with rapid production of large colonies, clearly defined zones of hemolysis and good colonial differentiation for all-around performance with Columbia Blood Agar when used with whole defibrinated blood.

Traditionally, blood agar has been either casein hydrolysate or meat infusion media. The advantage of the first lies in the rapid production of large colonies, and the second in clearly defined zones of hemolysis and good colonial differentiation. This formulation combines the virtues of both for optimal performance1.

  • Produces large colonies of fastidious microorganisms with clearly defined hemolytic reactions and colonial morphology.
  • Serves as an ideal base for the media containing blood and for selective media formulations in which different combinations of antimicrobial agents are used as additives.
