Description

Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones, and is vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood. Albumin is also seen to bind to exogenous substances, particularly drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, warfarin), and strongly influence their pharmacokinetics. Oxidative stress leading to changes in the redox state of albumin has widely varied effects on its physiological function. Albumin-bound fluorescence was used in serum of patients with chronic renal failure.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

• Albumin is derived from human serum

• Albumin is affected by oxidative stress that can alter its redox state and thereby alter its physiological function

Application

• Albumin has been used in the preparation of nanocarriers as advanced drug delivery systems

• It has the ability to facilitate diffusion and active transport of substances such as steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones

• It also helps maintain the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood and buffers pH

• It can bind to some substances, including drugs such as ibuprofen and warfarin, and strongly influence their pharmacokinetics

• It is involved in the formulation of media for culture of mammalian cells for laboratory research
