Gassner Medium

Detect and isolate pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae from food samples with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Gassner Medium. It is a modification of the original Gassner (water blue metachrome yellow lactose) medium¹. The medium contains metachrome yellow, which inhibits the Gram-positive accompanying flora. Lactose-digesting microorganisms such as Escherichia coli or Klebsiella species form blue colonies with simultaneous blue colouring of the surrounding agar. Lactose-negative microorganisms, such as Salmonella, Serratia or Proteus species, form yellow colonies with a yellow background.

Use Gassner Medium for selective detection and isolation of Enterobacteriaceae from food and other samples.

• Selective: presence of metachrome yellow inhibits non-target Gram-positive flora.
• Easy-to-read: Lactose positive organisms form blue colonies while lactose negative organisms form yellow colonies.
• Ready-to-use convenience of prepared media.
