Selectively isolate and cultivate Listeria monocytogenes from samples using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Listeria Enrichment Broth. Listeria Enrichment Broth was developed as an alternative to the cold enrichment procedure1. The use of broth enrichment procedure improves isolation of low numbers of L. monocytogenes. It is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration and the American Public Health Association (APHA) for testing dairy products.
Listeria monocytogenes is a common contaminant in raw milk, meats, vegetables, seafood, and in the food processing environment2,3 and are commonly found in soil, intestines of many animals that includes fish, birds, dairy cattle, household pets etc. It is transmitted to humans by consumption of foods contaminated with fecal matter and the bacilli. This method used to promote growth of potentially injured cells determines successful recovery of Listeria from food and environmental sources while simultaneously inhibiting non-Listeria background organisms4.
Use Listeria Enrichment Broth for selective isolation and cultivation of Listeria monocytogenes.
This medium contains casein peptone and soy peptone which provide nutrients necessary for bacterial growth. Bacterial growth is stimulated by B-complex vitamins supplied by yeast extract. Dextrose is the carbohydrate source. Dipotassium phosphate acts as a buffering agent whereas sodium chloride provides essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Selective agents such as cycloheximide, acriflavine, and nalidixic acid inhibit frequently encountered background organisms.
