Recover dimorphic pathogenic fungi from contaminated specimens with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Yeast Extract Phosphate Agar (Smith's Medium). In 1975, Smith and Goodman demonstrated the use of Yeast Extract Phosphate Agar for selective isolation of dimorphic fungi from contaminated specimens. Concentrated ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) is placed on the agar surface after it is inoculated with the specimen. The NH4OH diffuses into the agar and inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and many saprophytic fungi normally found in clinical specimens, while allowing slow-growing dimorphic fungi
Use Yeast Extract Phosphate Agar for primary isolation of dimorphic pathogenic fungi from contaminated specimens.
