Presumptively identify Peptostreptococcus anaerobius using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ SPS Disk. Graves et al. used a reagent-impregnated disk to determine the susceptibility of anaerobic cocci to SPS. They reported that amongst anaerobic cocci only P. anaerobius is sensitive to SPS. Wideman and Wilkins further verified these findings and reported 98% overall accuracy in the identification of P. anaerobius isolated from clinical specimens1,2.

Peptostreptococcus anaerobius is a slow growing, Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) bacterium. P. anaerobius is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause multiple deep organ abscesses and infections throughout the body, especially in the abdominal cavity and female urogenitary tract.
Use SPS Disk for presumptive identification of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius.
SPS Disk contains sodium polyanethol sulfonate. Sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS) is a synthetic, heat stable anticoagulant which inhibits bactericidal agents in blood3. SPS has also been found to inhibit the growth of certain anaerobic cocci. The growth of P. anaerobius is inhibited by SPS. Positive test (sensitive) is indicated by a zone diameter of 12-27 mm around SPS disk.
