3,4,7,8-Tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline acts as a metal-chelating agent for transition metal-catalyzed processes. It is also used in the preparation of heteroleptic cationic iridium(III) complex viz. 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline-bis[2-(2',4'-difluorophenyl)pyridine]iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate. Further, it is employed as a ligand and forms dinuclear copper(II) hypocrellin B complexes. In addition to this, it plays an important role in the formation of tetraaqua(3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline-kappa2N,N')zinc(II) thiosulfate complex.

Aplicaciones
El 3,4,7,8-tetrametil-1,10-fenantrolina actúa como agente quelante para procesos de transición catalizada por metales. También se utiliza en la preparación del complejo heteroléptico catiónico iridio(III), es decir, 3,4,7,8-tetrametilo-1,10-fenantrolina-bis[2-(2′,4′-difluorofenil)piridina]iridio(III) hexafluorofosfato. Asimismo, se emplea como ligando y forma complejos de hipocretina B de cobre dinuclear(II). Además, desempeña un papel importante en la formación del complejo tetraaqua(3,4,7,8-tetrametil-1,10-fenantrolina-kappa2N,N′)cinc(II) tiosulfato.

Solubilidad
Soluble en 1,4-dioxano, acetona, diclorometano, N,N-dimetilformamida, N,N-dimetilacetamida, metanol y tolueno caliente.
