Isolate and enumerate coagulase-positive staphylococci from food or clinical samples in just 24 hours with this selective, chromogenic medium to aid rapid food safety assessment or to facilitate faster patient treatment.
Foods that require extensive handling and preparation or that are kept at slightly elevated temperatures after preparation are commonly involved in staphylococcal food poisoning.
Most species of staphylococci can produce some form of enterotoxin, the causative agent of staphylococcal enteritis. The production of these enterotoxins strongly correlates with the production of coagulase and/or thermonuclease1, both of which are used as markers of pathogenicity. When coagulase-positive staphylococci are prevalent in low numbers, as they are in many foods, they pose a limited risk of infection. However CPS numbers in excess of 1x105 cells/g are considered sufficient to produce enough enterotoxin to induce gastroenteritis.
