Legionella MWY Selective Agar

Isolate Legionella using Thermo Scientific™ Legionella MWY Selective Agar, a selective medium that is an alternative to GVPC and conforms to ISO. Achieve optimal recovery of Legionellaceae in short incubation periods from both environmental samples and clinical specimens.

MWY Medium has been successfully tested in the examination of clinical specimens with Bromcresol purple and Bromothymol blue coloring the colonies and aiding in the identification of organisms.

Legionella are aerobic, motile, nutritionally fastidious, pleomorphic, gram-negative rods that require special growth factors in culture media to grow. Transmission occurs through aerosolization or aspiration of contaminated water, not person-to-person. Legionellosis refers to two distinct clinical syndromes: Legionnaires’ disease, which most often presents as severe pneumonia, and Pontiac fever, which is an acute, febrile, self-limiting, viral-like illness. Over forty species of Legionella have been characterized; however, Legionella pneumophila remains the most prevalent etiological agent of Legionnaires’ disease. Legionella can be isolated from respiratory tract secretions of all types, sterile body fluids such as blood, and biopsy material.
