Isolate and differentiate Shigella and Salmonella spp. from enteric pathological specimens while simultaneously producing larger and numerous colonies of Shigella spp. that can easily be picked off and emulsified in saline for slide agglutination tests with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Hektoen Enteric Agar/DCA Leifson Agar Biplate. The convenient biplate format allows simultaneous isolation and detection of Shigella and Salmonella spp. from stool specimens.

Salmonella and Shigella are major causes of bacterial enteric illness with transmission occurring via the fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Hektoen Enteric Agar/DCA Leifson Agar Biplate allows simultaneous isolation and detection of Shigella and Salmonella spp.

  • Easy-to-read: on Hektoen Enteric Agar shigellae form green moist raised colonies, while salmonellae form blue-green colonies, and other coliforms form salmon-pink to orange colonies surrounded by a zone of bile precipitation.
