The Ion Chef™ system automates Ion AmpliSeq™ library preparation, template preparation, and chip loading for targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows on the Ion GeneStudio™ S5 systems. Cartridge-based reagents, integrated quality checks, and an intuitive touchscreen interface simplify sample preparation and reduce hands-on time. The standardized workflow helps laboratories generate consistent sequencing-ready chips with fewer manual processing steps.

Key features

  • Automated Ion AmpliSeq library preparation, template preparation, and chip loading
  • Cartridge-based reagent system with integrated sample and reagent tracking
  • Less than 15 minutes of hands-on setup each for library preparation and template preparation workflows
  • Standardized workflows that help reduce user-to-user variability

Simplify the Ion Torrent™ NGS workflow

The Ion Chef system combines library preparation, template preparation, and chip loading into a single automated workflow. Library construction, equalization, pooling, template preparation, and chip loading are performed using preconfigured protocols and consumables. This connected workflow reduces manual processing steps and provides a straightforward approach to prepare samples for sequencing.

Consistent automated sample preparation

Automated barcode identification, reagent verification, onboard diagnostics, and workflow checks support consistent instrument setup and operation. Standardized processing helps reduce variability associated with manual sample preparation and provides reproducible chip loading across supported workflows.

Save time and labor

Typical setup for library preparation and template preparation requires less than 15 minutes of hands-on time for each workflow. Automation allows laboratory personnel to spend less time performing repetitive sample preparation tasks and more time on sequencing projects, data review, and other laboratory activities.

Flexible support for targeted sequencing

The Ion Chef system supports a broad range of targeted sequencing applications using Ion AmpliSeq panels and workflows. Laboratories can perform automated library preparation for oncology, inherited disease, reproductive health, infectious disease, microbiology, transcriptomics, and custom targeted sequencing applications using a common workflow across the Ion GeneStudio S5 systems.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I run the Ion GeneStudio S5 System/Ion Chef Instrument at lower humidity levels (10-20% humidity) rather than the 40% humidity recommended in the user guide?

We do not recommend running the Ion GeneStudio S5 System/Ion Chef Instrument in environmental conditions other than our recommended operating conditions. When the instrument runs within a lower humidity range of 10-20% there are risks to the electronics, as low humidity levels are likely to lead to electrostatic discharges. Damage to the electronics can result in run failure and hence performance cannot be guaranteed. Please ensure that the instrument is run at the recommended humidity of 40%.
