Anaerobe Blood Agar (WC) with Nalidixic Acid + Tween

Isolate, cultivate non-sporing anaerobes and/or undertake susceptibility testing of aerobic bacteria from clinical samples using Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Anaerobe Blood Agar (WC) with Nalidixic acid + TWEEN™ commonly known as NAT medium. The presence of Nalidixic acid makes the medium selective for non-sporing anaerobes, while TWEEN 80 stimulates the growth of Gram positive anaerobes and slowly lyses the blood allowing early colonial pigmentation by Prevotella Melaninogenica¹.

Use Anaerobe Blood Agar (WC) with Nalidixic acid + TWEEN for the isolation of non-sporing anaerobes from clinical samples and for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of aerobic bacteria using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) procedure. The medium utilizes Thermo Scientific™Oxoid™ Wilkins Chalgren Agar as a base².

The recovery of non-sporing anaerobes from clinical material may sometimes prove difficult in specimens containing mixture of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. As described by Wren⁴, the presence of Nalidixic acid makes the medium virtually non-inhibitory to most non-sporing anaerobes While retaining good selectivity for these organisms when present in mixed cultures. The medium is patiularly useful for the recovery of non-sporing Gram positive anaerobes since the presence of TWEEN 80 stimulates their growth.
