Description:
Anaerobe Blood (WC) Nalidixic Acid + Tween

Isolate, cultivate non-sporing anaerobes and/or undertake susceptibility testing of aerobic bacteria from clinical samples using Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Anaerobe Blood Agar (WC) with Nalidixic acid + TWEEN™ commonly known as NAT medium. The presence of Nalidixic acid makes the medium selective for non-sporing anaerobes, while TWEEN 80 stimulates the growth of Gram positive anaerobes and slowly lyses the blood allowing early colonial pigmentation by Prevotella Melaninogenica1.

Use Anaerobe Blood Agar (WC) with Nalidixic acid + TWEEN for the isolation of non-sporing anaerobes from clinical samples and for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of aerobic bacteria using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) procedure. The medium utilizes Thermo Scientific™Oxoid™ Wilkins Chalgren Agar as a base2.

  • Selective for non-sporing anaerobes: presence of Nalidixic acid and TWEEN makes it selective for non-sporing anaerobes.
  • Superior performance: superior recovery of non-clostridial anaerobes compared to that of kanamycin and neomycin agars3.
  • Ready-to-use convenience of prepared media

The recovery of non-sporing anaerobes from clinical material may sometimes prove difficult in specimens containing mixture of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. As described by Wren4, the presence of Nalidixic acid makes the medium virtually non-inhibitory to most non-sporing anaerobes While retaining good selectivity for these organisms when present in mixed cultures. The medium is patiularly useful for the recovery of non-sporing Gram positive anaerobes since the presence of TWEEN 80 stimulates their growth.
