Columbia Agar with Blood / MacConkey Agar No. 3

Isolate and cultivate fastidious microorganisms with clearly visible haemolytic reactions (staphylococci and streptococci), detect and enumerate coliform organisms such as E. coli, while at the same time isolating and detecting Salmonella and Shigella spp., using Thermo Scientific™ Columbia Agar with Blood / MacConkey Agar No. 3, a single plate that includes two media formulations.

Read more results from a single patient sample and produce more diagnostic details of pathogenic organisms whilst reducing storage capacity issues in the incubator with a bi-plate that includes two widely used microbiological media.

Columbia Agar with Blood on one side of the plate contains 7% sheep blood to promote growth of fastidious organisms with clearly visible haemolysis forms for staphylococci and streptococci, and it gives typical growth for S.pneumoniae (dent morphology).

MacConkey Agar No. 3 on the other side of the plate is a selective medium for differentiating between coliforms and lactose and non-lactose fermenters while gram-positive cocci are completely inhibited.
