4-Vinylpyridine acts as a co-monomer in styrene-butadiene polymers to promote adhesion between the rubber compound and supporting fibers (or cords) in tires, belts and hoses. It serves as an intermediate for manufacturing chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Further, it is used as a reagent for the modification of cysteine. In addition to this, it is used to make poly(4-vinylpyridine) and elastomers.

Aplicaciones
La 4-vinilpiridina actúa como comonómero en polímeros de estireno-butadieno para promover la adhesión entre el compuesto de caucho y las fibras de soporte (o cordones) en neumáticos, correas y mangueras. También como intermedio para la fabricación de productos químicos y farmacéuticos, y se utiliza como reactivo para la modificación de la cisteína. Además, se utiliza para hacer poli(4-vinilpiridina) y elastómeros.

Solubilidad
Miscible con agua, cloroformo, etanol, ácidos diluidos, alcohol, hidrocarburos, ésteres y cetonas.

Notas
Sensible a la luz. Incompatible con ácidos fuertes, agentes oxidantes fuertes, radiación ultravioleta e iniciadores de radicales libres.
