General Description

  • Lactose is a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose
  • Lactose is the major sugar found in dairy products such as milk and cheese
  • alpha-D-Lactose monohydrate is used as a carrier and stabilizer of products in the pharmaceutical and food industries

Applications

  • Lactose has been used in vitro to interact with carbohydrate recognition domains on a recombinant form of LGALS9, thus blocking downstream functions of the protein
  • It has been used as a control to study sugar dependency in Drosophila, which do not digest lactose
  • As a common component of pharmaceutical tablets, alpha-lactose has been used in laboratory settings to imitate drug administration
