Isolate and enumerate coagulase positive Staphylococci from foods and other sources1 using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Baird-Parker Agar Base (Dehydrated). Zebovitz, Evan, and Nivan developed Baird-Parker medium by modifying tellurite glycine medium2. This medium is recommended for use in the examination of foods and other materials by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP)3-7.

Use Baird-Parker Agar Base for isolation and enumeration of coagulase positive Staphylococci from foods and other sources.

  • Selective solid medium - Lithium chloride acts as a selective agent which inhibits most bacteria other than S. aureus.
  • Easy-to-read: Staphylococcus aureusforms grey-black shiny colonies with surrounding clear zones.
  • Recommended for use in the examination of foods and other materials by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP)3-7.

This medium contains beef extract, peptone, and yeast extract which supplies nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, vitamins, and trace minerals. Sodium pyruvate and glycine enhance the growth of S. aureus. S. aureus reduces potassium tellurite to metallic tellurium resulting in black colonies. On further incubation many strains of S. aureus form opaque zones within the clear zones because of lecithinase or lipase activity.
