Isolate Campylobacter species using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Campylobacter Blood Free Selective Agar Base (Dehydrated). Campylobacter has worldwide distribution and is ubiquitous in domestic pets and food animals (e.g., poultry, cattle, etc). This medium is based on the formulation described by Bolton, Hutchinson, and Coates in1. The addition of cefoperazone resulted in increased inhibition of contaminating organisms. It is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration and by the American Public Health2,3.

In this medium blood has been replaced by a mixture of charcoal, ferrous sulfate, sodium pyruvate, and casein peptone. This medium contains gelatin, casein peptone, and beef extract which provide amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, vitamins, and other nutritional compounds necessary for the growth of Camplyobacter. Charcoal is a detoxifying agent which also reduces oxygen tension. Sodium chloride is a source of essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Ferrous sulfate and sodium pyruvate enhance the growth and aerotolerance of Camplyobacter spp.

  • Selective media: Due to the presence of the selective agents like cefoperazone and amphotericin B, the medium is selective for Campylobacter
  • Recommended by the Food and Drug Administration and by the American Public Health2,3.
