The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Astral MS introduces improved front-end ion optics (e.g., high-capacity ion transfer tube, electrodynamic ion funnel) and a novel Astral analyzer, enabling increased ion flux and lower detection limits. In the Orbitrap Astral Zoom MS, additional hardware features such as the “Bent Trap” pre-accumulation, “Low-Input Mode,” and enhanced duty cycle further improve sensitivity—supporting applications which include single-cell proteomics and low-material immunopeptidomics.

For both Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Astral Mass Spectrometers, the standard mass-range is m/z 40–6000 (for the 6000 version) and optionally m/z 40–8000 when a BioPharma option is selected. This extended range and flexibility supports workflows for protein profiling up to intact-protein/top-down biotherapeutic characterization—offering broader application coverage than many dedicated single-technique MS systems.

The Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Astral MS features MS² acquisition rates up to 200 Hz with the Astral analyzer. The Astral Zoom MS advances this further, offering up to ~270 Hz MS² scan rates, enabling much higher sample throughput—e.g., processing ~300 samples per day in proteomics workflows. These improvements translate into faster gradient runs, more MS² events per chromatographic peak, and higher throughput than many previous generation HRAM systems.
