Abstract
Immunoglobulin light chains generate hydrogen peroxide.
Authors:Wang PX, Sanders PW,
Journal:J Am Soc Nephrol
PubMed ID:17360948
'As low molecular weight proteins, restriction from glomerular filtration is minimized, permitting significant amounts of Ig light chains to be endocytosed into the proximal tubule epithelium, particularly in plasma cell dyscrasias. Recent studies have shown that this effect of concentrating light chains within the proximal tubule alters cell function. This ... More
Estrogen prevents cardiomyocyte apoptosis through inhibition of reactive oxygen species and differential regulation of p38 kinase isoforms.
Authors:Kim JK, Pedram A, Razandi M, Levin ER
Journal:J Biol Chem
PubMed ID:16407188
'From human and animal studies, estrogen is known to protect the myocardium from an ischemic insult. However, there is limited knowledge regarding mechanisms by which estrogen directly protects cardiomyocytes. In this report, we employed an in vitro model, in which cultured rat cardiomyocytes underwent prolonged hypoxia followed by reoxygenation (H/R), ... More
24-dehydrocholesterol reductase/seladin-1: a key protein differentially involved in adrenocorticotropin effects observed in human and rat adrenal cortex.
Authors:Battista MC, Roberge C, Martinez A, Gallo-Payet N,
Journal:Endocrinology
PubMed ID:19520779
'DHCR24 (24-dehydrocholesterol reductase), or seladin-1, is one of the most expressed genes in the adrenal gland. Because the rat and human adult adrenal cortex differ in their respective functional properties, the aim of the present study was to verify whether seladin-1 may be differentially involved in basal and ACTH-stimulated steroidogenesis ... More
Tubacin kills Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-Burkitt lymphoma cells by inducing reactive oxygen species and EBV lymphoblastoid cells by inducing apoptosis.
Authors:Kawada J, Zou P, Mazitschek R, Bradner JE, Cohen JI,
Journal:J Biol Chem
PubMed ID:19386607
'Tubacin is a small molecule inhibitor of histone deacetylase 6 and blocks aggresome activity. We found that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cells were generally killed by lower doses of tubacin than EBV-transformed lymphoblastoid cells (LCLs) or EBV-negative BL cells. Tubacin induced apoptosis of LCLs, which was inhibited by ... More
HER-2 signaling, acquisition of growth factor independence, and regulation of biological networks associated with cell transformation.
Authors:Bollig-Fischer A, Dziubinski M, Boyer A, Haddad R, Giroux CN, Ethier SP,
Journal:Cancer Res
PubMed ID:20736364
'Activated oncogenes are the dominant drivers of malignant progression in human cancer, yet little is known about how the transformation from proto-oncogene to activated oncogene drives the expression of transformed phenotypes. An isogenic model of HER-2-mediated transformation of human mammary epithelial cells was used along with HER-2-amplified human breast cancers ... More
