The FocalCheck Thin-Ring Fluorescent Microspheres Kit is specifically designed to help researchers examine the alignment, sensitivity and stability of confocal laser scanning microscopes. We have treated the microspheres in this kit with dyes to stain the surface of each bead, resulting in a well-defined dye layer that creates a ring in optical sections. These microspheres produce a striking visual representation of instrument misalignment or other optical aberrations, making them ideal tools for optimizing the performance of confocal microscopes. Each suspension in the kit contains beads with a different color configuration. One suspension contains beads with two ring stains (green and red). The second suspension contains beads that have a green ring stain and a dark red stain throughout. The beads in the third suspension have a red ring stain and are stained blue throughout.

Abstract
Smaug1 mRNA-silencing foci respond to NMDA and modulate synapse formation.

Journal:J Cell Biol
PubMed ID:22201125
'Mammalian Smaug1/Samd4A is a translational repressor. Here we show that Smaug1 forms mRNA-silencing foci located at postsynapses of hippocampal neurons. These structures, which we have named S-foci, are distinct from P-bodies, stress granules, or other neuronal RNA granules hitherto described, and are the first described mRNA-silencing foci specific to neurons. ... More
Mammalian Smaug is a translational repressor that forms cytoplasmic foci similar to stress granules.

Journal:J Biol Chem
PubMed ID:16221671
'Cytoplasmic events depending on RNA-binding proteins contribute to the fine-tuning of gene expression. Sterile alpha motif-containing RNA-binding proteins constitute a novel family of post-transcriptional regulators that recognize a specific RNA sequence motif known as Smaug recognition element (SRE). The Drosophila member of this family, dSmaug, triggers the translational repression and ... More
Dynein and kinesin regulate stress-granule and P-body dynamics.
Authors:Loschi M, Leishman CC, Berardone N, Boccaccio GL,
Journal:J Cell Sci
PubMed ID:19825938
Stress granules (SGs) and P-bodies (PBs) are related cytoplasmic structures harboring silenced mRNAs. SGs assemble transiently upon cellular stress, whereas PBs are constitutive and are further induced by stress. Both foci are highly dynamic, with messenger ribonucleoproteins (mRNPs) and proteins rapidly shuttling in and out. Here, we show that impairment ... More
Mammalian Staufen 1 is recruited to stress granules and impairs their assembly.
Authors:Thomas MG, Martinez Tosar LJ, Desbats MA, Leishman CC, Boccaccio GL,
Journal:J Cell Sci
PubMed ID:19193871
Stress granules are cytoplasmic mRNA-silencing foci that form transiently during the stress response. Stress granules harbor abortive translation initiation complexes and are in dynamic equilibrium with translating polysomes. Mammalian Staufen 1 (Stau1) is a ubiquitous double-stranded RNA-binding protein associated with polysomes. Here, we show that Stau1 is recruited to stress ... More
Staufen recruitment into stress granules does not affect early mRNA transport in oligodendrocytes.

Journal:Mol Biol Cell
PubMed ID:15525674
Staufen is a conserved double-stranded RNA-binding protein required for mRNA localization in Drosophila oocytes and embryos. The mammalian homologues Staufen 1 and Staufen 2 have been implicated in dendritic RNA targeting in neurons. Here we show that in rodent oligodendrocytes, these two proteins are present in two independent sets of ... More
