MacConkey Agar No. 2 (Dehydrated)

Detect and enumerate enterococci from water, sewage, food products with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ MacConkey Agar No. 2 (Dehydrated). MacConkey Agar No.2 is a modification of the original MacConkey solid medium and is especially useful for the recognition of enterococci, in the presence of coliforms and non-lactose fermenters from water, sewage, food products, etc.

Use MacConkey Agar No. 2 for detection of coliform organisms in water, wastewater, and dairy products for the presence of indicator groups such as coliforms. Besides safety, indicator groups provide a measure of food quality and spoilage potential. One of the most common groups of bacteria employed as indicator organisms by the food industry are the coliforms, which can be regarded as a subgroup within the Enterobacteriaceae.

• Easy-to-read: enterococci appear as small intensely red colonies with a pale periphery while non-lactose fermenters appear colorless.
• Selective: selective for enterococci, while completely inhibiting bile tolerant Gram-positive cocci, such as staphylococci, and non-fecal streptococci.
