The primary aliphatic amine of the green fluorescent Oregon Green™ cadaverine can be reversibly coupled to aldehydes and ketones to form a Schiff base - which can be reduced to a stable amine derivative by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) or sodium cyanoborohydride (NaCNH3) to form new biotinylated probes. Carboxylic acids of proteins and other water-soluble biopolymers can be coupled to this molecule in aqueous solution using water-soluble carbodiimides such as EDAC (E2247). This molecule can also be used as a water-soluble, fixable polar tracer.

Abstract
Optical properties and application of a reactive and bioreducible thiol-containing tetramethylrhodamine dimer.
'Thiolated dimeric tetramethylrhodamine (TAMRA) was synthesized in a straightforward procedure utilizing commercially available 5(6)-succinimidyl TAMRA and cystamine hydrochloride. The thiol-containing TAMRA dimer displayed distinct spectral properties in reduced and oxidized forms; covalent dimer formation produced greater effects on the spectral properties than previously reported for noncovalent TAMRA dimers or dimers ... '[structure: see text] To probe the activities of sperm ADAM protein (fertilinbeta), we devised a general synthetic strategy to generate fluorescently labeled fertilinbeta oligopeptide polymers. Immunofluorescence studies with these polymers demonstrated that fertilinbeta polymers bind specifically to a protein receptor on the mouse egg plasma membrane.' ... More
