Uric acid is a metabolite of purines, nucleic acids and nucleoproteins. Hyperuricaemia may be observed in renal dysfunction, gout, leukemia, toxemia of pregnancy or some genetic disorders. Decreased levels may be observed with severe hepatocellular disease and defective renal tubular reabsorption.
