Astrocyte Medium (Gibco™)

GIBCO® Astrocyte Medium has been specially formulated to support the growth of primary human and rat astrocytes while retaining their phenotypes. The medium has been internally validated and optimized to provide an optimal balance between cell growth and the maintenance of cell viability, normal phenotype, and function. If more rapid proliferation is desired, addition of an appropriate amount of epidermal growth factor (EGF) is recommended, although cells may exhibit morphological and phenotypic changes.

Astrocytes are a type of glial cells of the nervous system with a typical star shape. It has been discovered in recent years that astrocytes not only function as gap fillers and structural supports, but play an active role in supporting the normal functions of neurons, oligodendrocytes, neural stem cells, blood-brain barrier, and so on. They regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, respond to CNS injury, and play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of ischemic neuronal death, and they have remained as one of the most active research areas in neuroscience.

GIBCO® Astrocyte Medium has three components: base medium (D MEM), N-2 Supplement, and OneShot™ Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). Mixing of these three components yields a complete medium.

Hibernate™-A Medium (Gibco™)

B-27™ Electrophysiology Kit (Gibco™)

The B-27® Electrophysiology Kit contains Neurobasal® Medium, Electro and B-27® Supplement, Electro, both specifically developed to enhance network spike rates in cultured neurons when compared with other media and supplement combinations. Electrophysiology is the fundamental technique to assess such electrical activities to study the functions and dysfunctions in cultured neurons.

Using the B-27® Electrophysiology Kit in your neuronal studies offers:

• Increased synapse densities
• More spontaneous spike rates
• Improved multielectrode array efficiency

More Synapses, More Signal, Simpler Testing
The B-27® Electrophysiology Kit is an improvement to Neurobasal® and B-27® combination for cultured networks. Hippocampal and cortical neurons cultured in this media system show an increased density of synapses and neurotransmitter receptors which produce higher spike rates in neural networks, helping to simplifying your study.

Relevant Results for Your Electrophysiology Studies
Using Invitrogen® B-27® Electrophysiology Kit, allows you to get more relevant results when studying neuron physiology and the biochemical basis of normal and disease processes. The B-27® Electrophysiology Kit can yield better results in other electrophysiological studies, including neurons used in multielectrode arrays in neurotoxicology and neuropharmacology studies.

For other applications, we offer alternative formulations of B-27® and Neurobasal®.

Hibernate™-E Medium (Gibco™)

Hibernate® is a CO2-independent nutrient medium for the maintenance of neural cells, tissue, and tissue slices. Hibernate®-A is the nutrient medium for adult and postnatal cells or tissue in ambient carbon dioxide levels; Hibernate®-E is the nutrient medium for embryonic cells or tissue in ambient carbon dioxide levels. The first application allows for longer period (up to 48 hours) maintenance of neuron viability in ambient CO2. This gives scientists greater convenience and control running bench-top live cell experiments, such as microscopy studies, flow cytometry, and other physiology studies. The second application of Hibernate® is for the preservation of viable brain tissue before processing for up to a month with refrigeration and maintenance of tissue slices.

• Optimized media systems for the viable storage of neural tissue and slices for up to 1 month at 2 - 8 °C - convenient systems that allow scientists to preserve tissue⁄slices before processing

• Maintenance of neuronal cells viability and functions at ambient CO2 level for up to 48 hours - makes conducting live-cell experiments possible without an expensive CO2 chamber adapted to instrument

• Manufactured under cGMP.

GIBCO® Hibernate®-A and Hibernate®-E are CO2-independent nutrient media for the maintenance of neural cells and preservation of tissue. It is supplied as 1X medium and mixing of Hibernate® with GIBCO® B-27® Supplement (50X) yields a complete medium.

For Research Use Only. Not intended for any animal or human therapeutic or diagnostic use, unless otherwise stated.
