Rat Primary Cortical Astrocytes (Gibco™)
Ready-to use system: highly pure cells, superior cell morphology and post-thaw viability, and excellent cell expansion. With GIBCO® Rat Primary Cortical Astrocytes, we offer neuroscience researchers an ideal, ready-to-use substitute to freshly isolated astrocytes. The cells are isolated from the cortex of Sprague-Dawley at day E19 of gestation and passage once before cryopreservation. Each vial contains 1 × 106 cells/ml viable cells (post-thaw). Unlike the other commercially available primary rat astrocytes that either yield about 50% post-thaw viability or form aggregates upon thawing, Gibco® Rat Primary Cortical Astrocytes consistently give 70% or more post-thaw viability. Astrocytes are the largest and most numerous neuroglial cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Astrocytes are known to regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, respond to CNS injury, and play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of ischemic neuronal death. In addition, astrocytes have been frequently used in the study of neuroglial interactions, blood brain barrier, stroke and other disease models. All these make astrocytes valuable source in cell biology studies, in animal model development and transplantation, and potentially in cell therapy applications.
Primary Rat Cortex Neurons (Gibco™)
GIBCO Primary Rat Cortex Neurons are isolated from day-18 rat embryos and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Each vial contains 1x10e6 cells⁄ml viable cells (post-thaw). With the cryopreserved Primary Rat Cortex Neurons (E-18), Invitrogen offers neuroscience researchers a flexible, ready-to-use, and quality alternative to acutely isolated neurons. Besides being convenience, these products are developed through vigorous internal research to afford comparable properties, such as viability and cell function, with cells that are acutely isolated. They are also highly pure cells containing minimum amount of astrocytes and other glial cells, and are with minimal lot-to-lot variability because of large single lot manufacturing. Unlike the other commercially available primary rat neurons that generally yield about 30% or lower post-thaw viability, Invitrogen cells consistently give post-thaw viability in the range of 50-80%.
Primary Mouse Cortical Neurons (Gibco™)
Gibco® Primary Mouse Cortical Neurons are isolated and cryopreserved from C57BL/6 embryonic day-17 mice. A flexible, ready-to-use, and quality alternative to fresh neurons, each vial contains 1 million cells per mL. These neurons consistently yield post-thaw viability in the range of 50-80%, have high neuronal purity, and are validated for functionality.
• High viability: post-thaw viability of 50% or greater
• High purity: greater than 98% neuronal phenotype
• Functionally validated: tested for long-term survival, neurotransmitter response, and transduction

Primary Rat Hippocampus Neurons (Gibco™)
GIBCO Primary Rat Hippocampus Neurons are isolated from day-18 rat embryos and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Each vial contains 1x10e6 cells⁄ml viable cells (post-thaw). Human Astrocytes (Gibco™)
GIBCO® Human Astrocytes are normal human cells derived from human brain tissue. When used together with GIBCO® Astrocyte Medium, GIBCO® Human Astrocytes are highly mature and differentiated GFAP positive cells with the typical star-like morphology. Due to their high degree of biological relevance, GIBCO® Human Astrocytes are the ideal cell type to use for studies of fundamental human neurological pathways and human neurological diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases), brain and other neural injuries (e.g. stroke).
Astrocytes are a type of glial cells of the nervous system with a typical star shape. It has been discovered in recent years that astrocytes not only function as gap fillers and structural supports, but play an active role in supporting the normal functions of neurons, oligodendrocytes, neural stem cells, blood-brain barrier, and so on. They regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, respond to CNS injury, and play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of ischemic neuronal death, and they have remained as one of the most active research areas in neuroscience.
GIBCO® Human Astrocytes are cryopreserved at passage one. Stored in liquid nitrogen. They are available as cells only or as a kit containing cells and media. Each vial contains>1 million viable cells after-thaw.
For Research Use Only. Not intended for any animal or human therapeutic or diagnostic use, unless otherwise stated.
