Kanamycin Sulfate Gibco™

Kanamycin Sulfate is a water-soluble antibiotic originally purified from the bacterium Streptomyces kanamyceticus. Kanamycin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Gibco® Kanamycin is effective against a wide variety of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria, and is used for the prevention of bacterial contamination of cell cultures. We offer a variety of antibiotics and antimycotics for cell culture applications.

Penicillin-Streptomycin (10,000 U/mL) Gibco™

This solution contains 10,000 units/mL of penicillin and 10,000 µg/mL of streptomycin. The antibiotics penicillin and streptomycin are used to prevent bacterial contamination of cell cultures due to their effective combined action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Penicillin was originally purified from the fungi Penicillium and acts by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacterial cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall. Streptomycin was originally purified from Streptomyces griseus. It acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria.

Hygromycin B (50 mg/mL) Gibco™

Hygromycin B is a water-soluble antibiotic purified from the bacterium Streptomyces hydroscopicus. Hygromycin B acts by binding to the 80S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibiting protein synthesis. Gibco® Hygromycin B is used as a bacterial selection antibiotic in the concentration range of 200–500 µg/mL. This product is supplied as a 50 mg/mL solution.

Resistance to Hygromycin B is conferred by the E. coli hygromycin resistance gene (hyg or hph). Hygromycin B has a different mode of action than Geneticin®, Blasticidin S, or Zeocin™ selection reagents, making it an excellent choice for dual-selection experiments (see selection antibiotics).

Gentamicin (50 mg/mL) Gibco™

Gentamicin sulfate is a water-soluble antibiotic originally purified from the fungus Micromonospora purpurea. Gentamicin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria. Gibco® Gentamicin is effective against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and is used to prevent the contamination of cell cultures by bacteria. The recommended working concentration ranges from 0.5 to 50 µg /mL.

Penicillin-Streptomycin-Glutamine (100X) Gibco™

The antibiotics penicillin and streptomycin are used to prevent bacterial contamination in cell cultures due to their effective combined action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Penicillin was originally purified from the fungi Penicillium and acts by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacteria cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall. Streptomycin was originally purified from Streptomyces griseus . It acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, leading to the inhibition of protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria. This solution contains 10,000 units of penicillin, 10,000 µg of streptomycin, and 29.2 mg/ml of L-glutamine in a 10 mM citrate buffer (for pH stability).

Neomycin Sulfate Gibco™

Gibco® Neomycin is produced by Streptomyces fradiae. Polymyxin B Sulfate acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria. Gibco® Neomycin Sulfate is used for the prevention of bacterial contamination of cell cultures. This antibiotic is highly active against gram-negative bacteria. The recommended working concentration is 50 µg/ml. We offer a variety of antibiotics and antimycotics for cell culture applications.

Geneticin™ Selective Antibiotic (G418 Sulfate), Powder Gibco™

Geneticin® Selective Antibiotic (G418 Sulfate) is produced by the bacterium Micromonospora rhodorangea and acts by binding the ribosome, thus inhibiting protein synthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Resistance to Geneticin® Selective Antibiotic (G418 Sulfate) is conferred by the E. coli APH (3’) – I and APH (3’) – II resistance genes. Gibco® Geneticin® Selective Antibiotic (G418 Sulfate) is used as a selective antibiotic in the concentration range of 100 - 200 µg/ml for bacteria, or 200 – 500 µg/ml for most mammalian cells. This product is supplied as a powder and should be made into a stock solution of 10 – 50 mg/ml in water. We offer a variety of cell culture antibiotics for your convenience.

Puromycin Dihydrochloride Gibco™

Puromycin Dihydrochloride is an aminonucleoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces alboniger. Puromycin works by inhibiting peptidyl transfer on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes; resistance is conferred by the expression of the pac gene.

Puromycin is widely used in cell biology as a selection antibiotic agent in mammalian cell culture systems. The recommended working concentration ranges from 0.2–5.0 µg/mL, although it can be toxic to eukaryotic cells at concentrations as low as 1 µg/mL. Gibco® Puromycin Dihydrochloride is supplied at 10 mg/mL in 20 mM HEPES buffer (pH 6.2–6.8) in 10 vials each containing 1 mL.

FR-31564 (Fosmidomycin, Sodium Salt) Invitrogen™

The phosphonate antibiotic FR-31564 (fosmidomycin) is an effective antimalarial agent that functions by blocking a mevalonate-independent pathway of isoprene synthesis. The antibiotic activity of FR-31564 is potentiated by glucose 1-phosphate. FR-31564 is also active against a variety of gram-negative bacteria.

Amphotericin B Gibco™

Amphotericin B is the generic version of Fungizone. 'Fungizone' is a trademark of E.R. Squibb & Sons, LLC. Amphotericin B prevents the growth of fungi by causing an increase in fungal plasma membrane permeability. Gibco Amphotericin B is used to prevent the contamination of cell cultures by yeast and multicellular fungi. Gibco Amphotericin B contains 250 µg of amphotericin B and 205 µg of sodium deoxycholate per mL of distilled water. The recommended working concentration ranges from 0.25 to 2.50 µg/mL.

Zeocin™ Selection Reagent Gibco™

Gibco® Zeocin™ Selection Antibiotic is a formulation of phleomycin D1, a glycopeptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces verticillus. Zeocin™ Selection Antibiotic acts by binding to and cleaving DNA, leading to cell death.

Zeocin™ Selection Antibiotic is used for selection of of mammalian, insect, yeast, bacterial, and plant cell cultures. It is used at a working concentration ranging between 50–400 µg/mL depending on the cell type. This product is supplied at 100 mg/mL in sterile water in one 50 mL bottle.

Ampicillin, sodium salt, irradiated Gibco™

Ampicillin is an antibiotic in the broad-spectrum penicillin group. Ampicillin differs from penicillin only by the presence of an amino group, which facilitates penetration through the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacteria. Ampicillin acts by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacteria cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall. Gibco® Ampicillin is used as a selective antibiotic for resistant bacteria, generally at a concentration of 10-25 µg/ml for liquid media and 35-50 µg/ml for plates. This product is provided as a powder and should be made into a stock solution at 10 mg/ml in water. Ampicillin is not used to prevent bacterial contamination of cell cultures due to concerns of mammalian and insect cell toxicity. We offer a variety of cell culture antibiotics for your convenience.

Blasticidin S HCl (10 mg/mL) Gibco™

Blasticidin S is a nucleoside antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces griseochromogenes. It is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Blasticidin S acts quickly by inhibiting peptide bond formation by the ribosome. Blasticidin S is used for the prevention of contamination of cell cultures. The recommended working concentration ranges from 2 to 20 µg/ml depending on the cell line. This product is provided as a solution at 10 mg/ml in 20 mM HEPES (pH 7.2-7.5). Life Technologies offers a variety of antibiotics and antimycotics for cell culture applications.

In addition, Blasticidin S is used as a bacterial selective antibiotic in the concentration range of 50–100 µg/ml. Resistance is conferred by expression of either one of two Blasticidin S deaminase genes: BSD (2) or bsr.These deaminases convert Blasticidin S to a nontoxic derivative. For selection purposes, the salt content of the LB medium must remain low (<90 mM) and the pH should not exceed 7.0 to maintain the activity of Basticidin S. Life Technologies also offers a variety of selection antibiotics.
