Maleic acid is a water-soluble, organic dicarboxylic acid and the cis-isomer of butenedioic acid. It can be converted to fumaric acid via isomerization. Salts, esters, and anions of maleic acid can be used in biochemical reactions and pharmaceutical drugs.
