Lubrication oils are commonly used to ensure that the surface of metal sheet behaves consistently during stamping and punching operations. Without a thin layer of lubricant on the metal, the sheet may tear, heat up too much, or cause the punch press to jam. The Thermo Scientific™ PROSIS™ coating weight sensor employs the principle of infrared absorption to accurately determine the thickness of oil and other hydrocarbon-based lubricants applied to metal sheet.  The sensor is typically on a scanner frame positioned on the sheet processing line after the oiler, but before coiling. By scanning from edge to edge across the sheet, the PROSIS sensor inspects the surface of the metal sheet for uniform oil coverage.
