Ytterbium ([Xe]5f146s2) (CAS 7440-64-4) occurs along with other rare earths in many rare minerals. Ytterbium is soft, malleable, and ductile. It is a lustrous, bright silver metal with potential use in improving the strength and mechanical properties of stainless steel. It reacts slowly with water and is soluble in dilute acids.
