Bromine ([Ar]3d104s24p5) (CAS 7726-95-6) is a heavy, mobile, reddish-brown liquid which vaporizes readily at room temperature. It is the only liquid nonmetallic element and is less active than chlorine; more active than iodine. Bromine is readily soluble in water and carbon disulfide. It unites with many elements and is used largely for manufacture of fire retardants.
