Ruthenium (Ru)

Ruthenium (Ru)

Ruthenium ([Kr]4d75s1) (CAS 7440-18-8) a member of the platinum group, is a hard, lustrous, white metal that does not tarnish at room temperatures. It does not occur native but in combination with other platinum group metals. Ruthenium combines with platinum and palladium as an effective hardener, creating alloys that are extremely wear-resistant. It improves the corrosion resistance of titanium and is superconductive when combined with molybdenum.

Primary XPS region: Ru3d Overlapping regions: C1s Binding energies of common chemical states:, Oxide charge referenced to adventitious C1s peak at 284.8eV., N/A, Ru3d region has significantly split spin-orbit components (D=4.2eV). Ru metal and RuO2 both give asymmetric Ru3d peaks shapes.
In 1980, the Japanese Nobel prize-winning chemist Ryoji Noyori reported that BINAP (2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl) complexed with ruthenium [BINAP-Ru(II)] catalyzed the asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-(acylamino)acrylic acids or esters to give the corresponding amino acid derivatives...
