Zinc ([Ar]3d104s2) (CAS 7440-66-6) is a bluish-white, lustrous metal with fair electrical conductivity. Zinc ores were used for making brass in ancient times, but metallic zinc was not produced until the 13th century. Five hundred years later, the element was rediscovered in Europe. It is brittle at room temperature, but malleable at 100 to 150°C. Zinc is used predominantly as an alloy with other metals.
