Carbohydrate-binding proteins or glycoproteins of a non-immunoglobulin nature that are highly specific for sugar groups that are part of other molecules and hence play a role in biological recognition. Lectins may be potent mitogens (polyclonal activators) and are known to mediate bacterial, viral, and fungal binding.
