E-Gel™ 96 Agarose Gels, 2% (Invitrogen™)

E-Gel® 96 Agarose Gels are bufferless, pre-cast gels designed for fast, high-throughput DNA electrophoresis. Each gel contains 96 sample lanes and 8 marker lanes that are ideal for screening multiple PCR products, plasmid preparations, and restriction digests. The unique 96-well staggered-well format provides a 1.6 cm run length that resolves between 100 bp and 10 kb. The E-Gel® 96 loading format is compatible with multi-channel pipettors, and the most commonly used 8-, 12-, and 96-pin liquid handling robots (see figure). With 12-minute run times, up to 20,000 samples can be resolved in a single day.

Alternative format—E-Gel® 96 2% with SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain
E-Gel® 96 2% with SYBR® Safe offers high-throughput labs performing agarose electrophoresis the option to eliminate the use of ethidium bromide. Unlike ethidium bromide, the DNA stain most commonly incorporated into agarose gels, SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain is a nontoxic, nonmutagenic DNA stain that is safer for the user, safer for the environment, and can save institutional overhead costs for disposal. There is no compromise involved with switching to SYBR® Safe. It is the safer alternative to ethidium bromide.

E-Gel™ EX Agarose Gels, 2% (Invitrogen™)

Invitrogen E-Gel EX precast agarose gels are designed for ultrasensitive and convenient DNA and RNA sample electrophoresis as fast as in 10–15 minutes. Each E-Gel agarose gel cassette contains all components and stain required for efficient gel separation and analysis—just load your samples and run. E-Gel agarose gels are ideal for analyzing PCR products, restriction digests, plasmid preparations, or for DNA fragment library analysis. E-Gel agarose gels are also suitable for a quick check of RNA samples.

Ultra-sensitive detection of DNA
E-Gel EX gels pre-stained with SYBR Gold DNA stain were developed for ultimate sensitivity and demonstrate up to 5-fold greater sensitivity than comparable gels containing ethidium bromide. This superior sensitivity allows you to use lower amounts of sample, saving time and money.

Fast and convenient analysis
E-Gel EX gels are our fastest-resolving agarose gels, enabling sample analysis in as little as 10–15 minutes. Each E-Gel agarose gel contains agarose, electrodes, SYBR Gold DNA stain, and a bufferless ion exchange system packaged inside a dry disposable cassette. E-Gel technology does not required any gel or buffer preparation or gel straining steps. Just load your samples and run.

Live monitoring of DNA migration
The E-Gel EX agarose gels are pre-stained with SYBR Gold II DNA gel stain with an excitation wavelength in the blue-light spectrum. When used on the E-Gel Power Snap Electrophoresis Device with integrated blue-light trans-illuminator, safe real-time monitoring of DNA or RNA migration is enabled without risk to eyes or possible damage of the sample, unlike UV illumination.

Quick check of RNA samples
Besides DNA analysis, E-Gel EX gels can also be used for fast analysis of RNA samples to check their integrity before proceeding with downstream applications.

Easy access to the gel
E-Gel cassettes are designed for convenient opening with a Gel Knife (Cat. No. EI9010), for easy excision of specific bands or transfer of the gel to a membrane for southern blot analysis.

Nucleic acid markers
For optimal DNA analysis on E-Gel agarose gels, we recommend specially formulated E-Gel 1 Kb Plus Express DNA Ladder (Cat. No. 10488091) or E-Gel 50 bp DNA Ladder (Cat. No. 10488099) or E-Gel Ultra Low DNA Ladder (Cat. No. 10488096). Our high-quality ready-to-use ladders are formulated using individual chromatography-purified DNA fragments and are suitable for storage at room temperature.

1 Kb Plus DNA Ladder (Invitrogen™)

Invitrogen 1 Kb Plus DNA Ladder is designed for sizing and approximate quantification of double-stranded DNA in the range of 100 bp to 15,000 bp. 1 Kb Plus DNA Ladder consists of 18 individual chromatography-purified DNA fragments and has a reference band at 1,500 bp for easy orientation.

1 Kb DNA Ladder is ideal for separation on 0.8–1% agarose gels.

Product use
The double-stranded DNA ladder can be visualized on 0.8–1% agarose gels after ethidium bromide or SYBR Safe staining. The ladder is designed with a uniform intensity of DNA bands for a clear view of each band. An exact amount of DNA in each band allows approximate quantification of DNA samples.

This ladder can be radiolabeled with T4 polynucleotide kinase or T4 DNA polymerase.

GeneRuler 1 kb DNA Ladder (Thermo Scientific™)

Thermo Scientific GeneRuler 1 kb DNA Ladder is recommended for sizing and approximate quantification of a double-stranded DNA in the range of 250 bp to 10,000 bp on agarose gels. The DNA ladder consists of 14 DNA fragments and is provided with 6X TriTrack DNA Loading Dye.

SYBR™ Safe DNA Gel Stain (Invitrogen™)

SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain is a highly sensitive stain for visualization of DNA in agarose or acrylamide gels. SYBR® Safe stain is specifically formulated to be a less hazardous alternative to ethidium bromide that can utilize either blue light or UV excitation.

• Reduce your exposure to highly mutagenic ethidium bromide and harmful UV light
• Increase your sensitivity by reducing nonspecific background fluorescence
• Use in place of ethidium bromide for all staining applications, including RNA staining

A better DNA stain
SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain is a better nucleic acid staining reagent for all of your molecular biology needs. Not only is SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain better for you and the environment, it’s better for your sample and your institution. Read more as to why SYBR® Safe DNA gel stain is your better option.

Safer than ethidium bromide
SYBR® Safe DNA Gel Stain has been specifically formulated and evaluated in a battery of toxicity tests with results indicating so that it is less mutagenic and safer for you to work with than ethidium bromide. An independent laboratory showed reduced mutagenicity of SYBR® Safe stain compared to ethidium bromide using the Ames test (see figure). You can further decrease your exposure risk by using visible blue-light illumination with SYBR® Safe stain rather than UV illumination. This is especially valuable when performing exposure-intensive protocols like cutting bands out of gels.

Excellent sensitivity
SYBR® Safe stain offers excellent sensitivity in nucleic acid visualization and documentation applications with either UV excitation or blue-light excitation. When bound to nucleic acids, the green-fluorescent SYBR® Safe stain has fluorescence excitation maxima at ~280 and ~502 nm, and an emission maximum at ~530 nm (see figure). Plus, when used with blue light illumination, SYBR® Safe stain has less background fluorescence than ethidium bromide–stained gels illuminated with UV light.

Easy to use
SYBR® Safe stain is supplied as a 10,000X concentrate in DMSO which can be used just like a solution of ethidium bromide. SYBR® Safe stain can be mixed into an agarose gel for staining during electrophoresis or the gel can be incubated in a solution of SYBR® Safe stain following electrophoresis. SYBR® Safe stain can be stored at room temperature in its original packaging to avoid excessive light exposure. We also offer SYBR® Safe E-Gel pre-cast agarose gels for the ultimate in convenience.

BlueJuice™ Gel Loading Buffer (10X) (Invitrogen™)

BlueJuice Gel Loading Buffer (10X) is designed for easy loading and tracking of DNA samples in agarose or native polyacrylamide gels. Visualization of DNA bands will not be obscured by the tracking dyes because they run outside the limits of most DNA samples.

Product use
The recommended concentration of this buffer for use with all DNA samples run on agarose gels is 1X. For acrylamide gels, the recommended concentration is 0.5 X.

TAE Buffer (Tris-acetate-EDTA) (50X) (Thermo Scientific™)

Thermo Scientific 50X TAE Buffer (Tris-acetate-EDTA) is used for electrophoresis of nucleic acids in agarose and polyacrylamide gels. You can use this buffer for both genomic and large supercoiled DNA, and you can also use this as both a running and a gel preparation buffer.

Note
TAE buffer has a relatively low buffering capacity. Therefore, periodic replacement of the buffer during prolonged electrophoresis is recommended.
